| A Children’s Picture Book by Sarah Baker & Illustrator Hazel Alemany |
I loved this hilarious rhyming story about speed demon Sid and his ambitious creation to launch himself into hypervelocity using his specially constructed catapult.
Sarah Baker’s fast paced and comic rhyme is beautifully imagined and captured by Hazel Alemany’s detailed illustrations. The colour and activity literally bounce off the page and there is so much going on in her pictures that even young babies will be entertained with identifying and naming animals and objects. It is a great tool for language development. Primarily aimed at 3 to 6-year olds but I think it has a much wider audience. KS1 and KS2 readers will be instantly engaged by Sid’s effervescent character and will want to read more.
Of course, Sid does get his wish to enter warp speed but with uproarious consequences which all ages will find amusing. I especially loved the egalitarianism of seeing Dad wearing the apron.
What a great debut from this new team. I can’t wait to read about Sid’s next adventure at the Safari Park. (link)
I would thoroughly recommend this picture book to speed demons everywhere and their antilock parents. Book purchasers also get access to extra material such as colouring pages. A great idea to keep your speed demon occupied on stay at home days.
